Interview with Lissa Bryan (Blog Tour)

1. Where did you come up with the titles?

The titles of all three novels come from The Lord of the Rings, which is the last movie my heroine, Carly, watches with her father before he dies of the pandemic virus sweeping around the world. In Tolkien’s saga, his characters are going on a long journey with a heavy burden —so are mine. In both stories, the characters are irrevocably changed by their experiences.
The title of the first novel, and of the series itself, comes from a line that Frodo says to Sam: "I'm glad you could be here with me, Sam. Here, at the end of all things." The second one comes from a line in The Fellowship of the Ring, about Sam and Frodo crossing the border into Mordor, into "the land of the Shadow," and the final title comes from something Sam says to Frodo in the Two Towers (in this case, the movie, but not the book). Sam says that sometimes you don’t want to know what happens to characters after the end of the story— how could everything turn out well, after they had endured so much? But Sam has faith the sun will be brighter in the end, after the shadows have gone.

2. Who designed the covers?

My publisher has the authors collaborate with artists to design their own covers, which is awesome, a freedom and control many publishers don’t offer. After I finished the editing process for The End of All Things, I was assigned an artist, but I still didn’t have a clue what I wanted. It was a difficult process for me because I’m more attuned to words than I am to images, and so trying to pick one that encapsulated the story was very difficult. I tried searching stock photo sites for post-apocalyptic images, and came away very discouraged. (Apparently, in a post-apocalyptic world, gun-toting girls will wear gasmasks with bikinis and miniskirts.) I couldn’t find anything I liked, but my publisher’s emails were getting more insistent on the subject. My book needed a cover before it could be finalized for production.
One evening, I was browsing through a friend’s vacation photos when I found it, the exact image I wanted for my cover, what I had been looking for all along, but had been unable to visually articulate. It was a picture her daughter had snapped while they were driving through a long tunnel. As soon as I saw it, I got excited. My artist,  Jada D’Lee (who has gone on to design quite a few awesome covers for other authors) was able to take the photo and re-work it into a gritty piece of modern art that perfectly conceptualized the mood I was going for. That’s why I decided to use it as the cover for the whole series in the compendium edition.
Jada also did the cover for the second volume, Land of the Shadow. What I liked about this was that the image shows the growth Carly has experienced so far. In the image, she’s taking the lead. The third cover was done by Jennifer McGuire, and shows Carly and Justin as partners, headed toward that sunlit place where the shadows have melted away.

3. Did you travel much for research?

I did do some traveling for these books, but mostly so I could explore abandoned locations to see how places would look after just a few years of neglect. I was surprised at how quickly things fell apart without regular maintenance and nature took over. I traveled to small, dying ghost towns, and then to Detroit so I could see how quickly boarded up and abandoned properties decay.
The locations I didn’t physically travel to, I scouted with Google Street View. I “walked” every step of Carly and Justin’s journey with them because I wanted to describe their surroundings accurately. I’m sort of pedantic that way— I want to know if my characters would really be walking uphill or downhill in a certain spot. Some locations I fictionalized, but in others, I’d actually search for vacation photos online so I could describe the color of the carpet in a location correctly.

Top 10 Most Useful Things in An Apocalypse by Lissa Bryan (BOOK TOUR)

So, the world has ended, or youve been given the doleful news its about to end. Lucky for you, Ive composed a shopping list to take along on your looting trips so you can be sure to grab the most useful stuff you can have during an apocalypse. These items are not only useful, theyll be the most valuable trade goods out there.
1)   Guns— even if you never need them for defense against zombies or home protection, you’re going to need them for hunting once the supply of cans of Spaghetti-Os is depleted. If you can’t get a gun, a crossbow or a powerful slingshot is another good choice. Don’t laugh at the slingshot: some of the modern models are as powerful as a .22 caliber handgun. And the best thing about crossbows and slingshots is you can make more ammo for them.

2)   Liquor— As Justin says, “It’s a pain-killer, a disinfectant, and a good time, all rolled into one.” It’s going to be one of the most valuable trade goods. I once told a paranoid acquaintance that if they were really worried about a societal collapse, they shouldn’t invest in gold. They should buy cases of Jack Daniels, Marlboros, and ammo.

3)   Medicines—Anti-diarrheal medication will be a life-saver, especially once people start getting exposed to non-purified water. Fever reducers such as aspirin will also be vital (become a wasteland doctor by learning to make it from willow bark!) Stronger pain killers would be great to have, but pharmacies tend to be the first places looted, so you’re probably not going to have much luck with that.

4)   Condoms—STDs and accidental pregnancy are still issues in the post-apocalypse world. Come prepared, as they say. Condoms can also keep your matches/kindling dry, keep dirt out of your weapons, and in a pinch, the unlubricated types can even be used to transport water. You can even put ‘em over your feet to keep them dry temporarily while crossing a stream. (Wet feet are very dangerous in a world where the smallest cut can lead to deadly infection.)

5)   Tampons— Women will need these, obviously, but you can also use them for bandaging wounds, filtering water, and starting fires.

6)   Weight loss powder/protein shakes— Your diet probably isn’t going to be consisting of recommended daily servings from all the food groups, so if you can supplement with diet shakes or muscle-building powders, it will probably help keep your body replenished with vitamins and nutrients you’re missing. And some Flinstones Chewables probably wouldn’t go amiss.

7)   Duct tape— An all-purpose repair kit in handy roll form. Or make a prom dress. Whatever the situation may call for.

8)   Bleach/iodine/water purifier— Once society crumbles, there goes our safe, clean water, too. We’re so used to being able to get potable water at the touch of a tap, we don’t even think about it, but clean water is going to be one of the most precious resources you can have, and you’re going to need a lot of it. You’ll have to get used to chemically purifying, filtering, distilling, or boiling every drop you drink.

9)   Sunscreen—Zombieland wasn’t joking. Who’s going to treat you for skin cancer? Wear sunscreen, cover up, and stay safe. Take care of yourself as best you can and prevent ailments before they start.

10)Salt— Another thing that so ubiquitous we don’t think about it. Modern food has tons of salt in it, but once the manufactured stuff goes, we’re going to need to find new sources of salt, not only for our dietary needs, but for preserving food.

Blog Tour Review: "Broken Promises" (The Broken Road #2) by Melissa Huie

Synopsis (Goodreads):When Shane appeared in her carport, Megan thought she was dreaming. The man who stole her heart, the father of her unborn child was the same man she feared dead. Elated and overjoyed, Megan believes they will finally get their happy ending.

But the happiness doesn’t last long. Shane’s long road home created demons, demons that Megan can’t fight. Past discretions come back to haunt them, and with that comes the paranoia and the distrust. And the trouble doesn’t stop there. Danger threatens their lives at every turn, and when the time comes, Megan must make the ultimate decision.

Will Shane and Megan have their happily ever after? Or will that be another Broken Promise?

My review:
This was a very enjoyable and quick story. It caught my attention from the first page and soon after that I got engaged in Megan's life. Megan, our main character, dreams a lot about her boyfriend Shane, who is thought to be dead in an explosion. So when he comes back after a few months, she doesn't know how to react or what to think. She then realizes that he has changed a lot and their life will be different because he is haunted by the ghost of his past.

Things are more complicated now due to the fact that Megan is pregnant and she can turn easily into a target, since their enemy is still on their trail. Also Meg's ex-fiance Tommy is always near her and Shane is jealous and insecure, seeing things that aren't there. I liked Shane in the beginning, but his attitude of bad boy, his seek for adventure and the obsession with his revenge got on my nerves. Maybe he was built like this way on purpose, I don't know, but this is how I felt sometimes. They fought so often and at times I wondered if they really cared for each other, mostly from Shane part.

Megan on the other hand is the opposite, she only wants a normal life, without all the danger, but she can see that her needs are too much for Shane who starts spending less time in her company "for the sake of his duty". She will have to trust him and to accept the instability.

One character that I really liked was Cole who was always there to save the day, taking care of Megan and her family. He had such a great personality and I would have been happy to meet him personally. Another aspect that was good to encounter was Megan's family - they were so close and always around, making me think of my own family. Another secondary characters as Kate and Kyle were sweet and adorable.

The plot had a few twists, but the accent was put on Megan and Shane's relationship and sexual attraction, giving us some hot scenes. After all the trouble, Shane proves to be a good guy and that all he has done was for Meg's safety. They show us how important is trust and love when hard times are near.

I had no idea at first that it was the second book in a series, because I didn't feel like I was missing something - well, at least until the end when I would have liked to know more background information about Megan and Shane's relationship. For my fulfillment I will have to read the first book to discover more.

As a whole it was a nice read, the characters were interesting to follow and the end gave me everything that I needed. Also the writing was simple, easy to understand and the thing that I enjoyed the most about this story.
I recommend to give this series a try, I'm sure many of you will love it.

Note: I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I liked it very much!

Excerpt - The Impaler Legacy by Ioana Visan - Blog Tour

“Miss Cantacuzino, wait…” Captain Nour said and hesitated. “You were wounded.”
It was the first time he’d brought up my injury, and I wished he hadn’t. He had seen the blood on my chest, with a matching stain on my back, and the hole in my shirt. It wasn’t hard to put two and two together, and Captain Nour, as much as we often didn’t see eye to eye, was an intelligent man. And he must have heard people talking about my miraculous recovery.
“I’ll be fine.” I went for the safer answer. I didn’t quite want to discuss Max’s blood involvement in this. The only people who knew about what had happened in this room were obviously Max, Jesse, Radu, Trotuş, and Spânu, and I didn’t want it advertized.
“Still, I fear we put you in too much danger. Maybe … maybe you should take some time off to recover first.”
My eyes narrowed at him. “Are you trying to protect me, or are you saying that I’m not fit for this job?”
“Protect you, yes … like it or not, it’s my job too. But I’ll never say the latter. You were not prepared for an operation of this size, and still none of us could have handled it any better.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“Well…” Captain Nour ran a hand over the back of his head. It was unsettling to see him so uncomfortable in his own skin. We had known each other for over a decade, and this was a first. “I promised your mother that I would make sure you were fine.”
“Really?” A short burst of laughter left my lips, and I winced as it made my chest hurt. “You’re afraid of my Mom?”
“Mrs. Cantacuzino can be very convincing,” he said, “and I’m afraid she’s right. We’ve been asking too much of you. This is a job for pandurs, not for the Little Council.”
“Maybe you’re right…” I chose my words carefully. There were times when I wished I had never set foot out of Romania, especially at night. I couldn’t let him find that out. “But I’m here. And I’m in charge. You still report to the Little Council, and while we’re here, I am the Little Council,” I reminded him and fought to suppress a victorious smile. “You can’t send me home packing.”
“But your mother—“

“Tell her I’m fine. It’s what I do.” I grinned. Poor Mom, she had no idea what the terror night had turned me into. “And now if you excuse me, I have some bodies to burn.”

Blog Tour Review & Author Video: Hope Springs (Longing for Home 2) by Sarah M. Eden

Synopsis:
All is not well in Wyoming. Katie Macauley gave up her life-long dream of returning to Ireland in order to make a home for herself in Hope Springs, but her future has never been so uncertain. The town is more divided than ever, with both the Irish and the Reds stealing property, burning buildings, and endangering lives.

Katie’s heart remains sharply divided between her love for playful Tavish and steady Joseph, a decision she feels ill-prepared to make. In the midst of the growing unrest, temperatures drop quickly, too quickly, and Irish nightmares of famine and cold resurface as the little Wyoming town struggles to beat the harsh winter.

Katie makes one sacrifice after another to keep the peace and help see her loved ones through the difficult days ahead, but will it be enough? Can the town make amends before their hatred consumes them all? And will Katie find the love she has been searching for as well as a home to call her own?

Review:
Such a great book! I was really excited to read the sequel of Longing for Home, which I also enjoyed, a book about the importance of family, stability and love. Again, the action takes place in Hope Springs, a very troubled town where people care more about their origin than their peace. The locals will need to learn a tough lesson to understand that the Irish and the Red are not that different after all.

Katie Macauley, our main character, is no longer a newcomer, but she still feels wronged in every step she takes. Despite every challenge, she manages to rise above the expectations and to surprise everyone with her cleverness, her working capacity and her light. Her determination to help those who need her aid is impressive and moving, Katie becoming a great role model, someone we should look up to. I wish I could listen to her beautiful music and to talk at least once with her, because she motivates me to be better and she is my favorite.

After spending so much time in Hope Springs I found myself attached to all the characters and I wasn't surprised when I started crying when bad things happened to them and laughed when they were happy. Sarah M. Eden's writing is so clear and attractive, making it impossible not to enjoy her work. I am now interested to read more from her and I'm sure I will be more and more delighted.

The ending was perfect, because I think it was so well-chosen. I'm not going to tell you who is the lucky man for Katie, but I am happy he completes her in every way. Both Tavish and Joseph are excellent men and they deserve all the best in the world, but unfortunately only one can win Katie. Their love was important to show her how precious she is and it helped her to reevaluate herself.

I recommend these two books to all of you, especially those who loves historical fiction and a good romance, who want to cry and laugh with the characters, to lean valuable lessons and to be part of a difficult, but special town.

Blog tour: Review "Blackmoore" by Julianne Donaldson - A Proper Romance

Blackmoore

Author: Julianne Donaldson

Publisher: Shadow Mountain

Published Date: September 9, 2013

Paperback/Kindle: 276 pages

Genre: Regency Romance

Book Brand: A Proper Romance

ISBN# 978-1-60907-460-9

I received an ARC copy from the publisher

Synopsis:

Kate Worthington knows she can never have her heart’s desire and so believes she will never marry. But Kate’s meddlesome mother has other plans. Kate journeys to the stately manor of Blackmoore on the cliffs above the seashore, where she must face the truth and the man that has kept her heart captive.

Set in northern England, Blackmoore is a Regency romance that tells the story of a young woman struggling to learn to follow her heart. With hints of Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters, Blackmoore is a page-turning tale of romance, intrigue and devotion.

My review:
It's official! Blackmoore has become one of my favorite books and believe me, I've read a lot. It's not only because of the Jane Austen feeling that you get when you read it, but also due to all the greatness that you encounter inside the pages. I fell in love with Kate and Henry from the beginning, they are so perfect for each other and I was keen to see them together even before they were aware of their feelings. I've found sweet and sad moments that made my eyes teary, wishing to see them happy.

Kate Worthington decides one day that she won't marry at all and tells everyone about it, but not the real reason behind it. Her only impediment is her cruel and despicable mother who does everything in her power to find a man for Kate, and she succeeds by making a bet that she knows her daughter won't refuse. In order to let her go to India (the country she and her spinster aunt want to visit) and also give up on the idea of marriage, she must receive three proposals during her first visit to Blackmoore and to reject them. Not that difficult, believes Kate, but when she asks Henry to help her in this matter, she will discover that her friend takes his job seriously and her heart might not be as determined to refuse him as she wished at the beginning. And with his beautiful and romantic proposals I wouldn't deny the love that he expects in return and neither would you. Henry is the perfect gentleman and the best friend and lover any girl dreams about. In times like these I start to believe I was born in the wrong era. Ha ha!

Blackmoore is the mansion where Henry Delafield and his sister Sylvia spend their time every summer of every year, leaving Kate to dream about this amazing place, without being able to see it. The reason she can't go with them is their mother's refusal, because she has special plans for Henry with a specific Miss St. Claire and they don't include Kate. After many stories and years passing by, Kate is still dreaming to taste the mysteries of Blackmoore, so one day Henry makes it happen (against his mother's wish) and it's the perfect timing for Mrs. Worthington to scheme her plan. Now Kate's whole existence begins to tremble.

The story is complex and full of romantic tension that I really loved. The attachment that you feel towards the characters is genuine and the same way is hatred, especially given to Kate's mother who is a reckless and shameful woman, in comparison to all the kindness and good temper that we see in her daughter. Although this is true, nobody wants to be connected with them, making poor Kate feel an outsider everywhere she goes. And when even her older sister copies her mother, these is no chance for her to be appreciated for who she is.
Let's talk a little about the cover - it's gorgeous. It shows Kate in her journey to Blackmoore, the building we can see in the back, surrounded by fog and enigma. The dress she wears is so classy and pretty, proper for those times.

I won't say more about it so you will be able to enjoy it entirely, without ruining the surprise, but I want to recommend it to all of you with all my heart and all my blessings, because I am very happy I had the opportunity to read it. The information that I learned about birds was very interesting and I began to pay more attention to their songs when I hear them outside. It really is a great book!

If you liked Blackmoore, don't hesitate to read "Edenbrooke", a book also by Julianne Donaldson. You can find it here.
